    The island of Jersey is located just off the coast of France, near Normandy, and is the biggest of the group of islands identified as the Channel Islands. The Channel Islands are a group of small islands in the channel between the UK and France and include Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney and Sark, the first two being the major of these islands. Although Jersey is closer to the French shoreline than the English shoreline it is the responsibility of the United Kingdom to defend it against any invasion attempts, with this said Jersey itself is not classed as part of the United Kingdom or the European Union, instead it is part of the Common Travel Area which fundamentally means that it is a passport free region.
