Novelty neckties can be funny and amuse those around you if worn at the right time. But are you sure you know when it's appropriate to wear one?

It's a great thing to have a sense of humor, there is no doubt. Being able to see the funny side of things will help you get through some tough times and be more philosophical than friends or colleagues who are humorless.

Advertising your sense of humor with a novelty necktie at the wrong time could well make you the laughing stock of the office and backfire on you.

Using a necktie that is appropriate for the circumstances you find yourself in is important if you are a novelty necktie lover.

There are thousands of novelty neckties around today. Some of them show your favorite characters from shows, movies or cartoons, others reflect your hobbies, your favorite pet, and your food or alcohol preferences or are just plain funny, but choosing a loud and bawdy necktie for a meeting of business partners is not recommended unless you own the company.

Be sensible with it and choose a necktie to suit the occasion. The time to wear your favorite 'my company stinks but I need the money' necktie is not when you are asking your boss for a raise.

Likewise, novelty neckties with your prowess with women might go down well with the guys on a Friday night after work, but your prospective in-laws may be less amused.

If wearing a plain tie makes you feel like you blend in with the crowd too much for your tastes, then there are more subtle novelty neckties from which to choose. These can reflect your personality just as much.

Some other types you can choose could be based on works of art for example, or maybe just show some sort of beautiful scenery that shouldn't offend anyone.

Novelty neckties often have a small and repeating pattern on them. So long as these are not examined too closely only you will know it carries some sort of message. If you then choose to point out what that message is, that is up to you.

If that doesn't grab you, then how about going for something with a small pattern on it depicting whatever it is that appeals to you. You can still let the world know what your favorite brand of beer is, but by choosing a novelty necktie with tiny images on it they will have to get pretty close to find out which brand you drink.

So, the bottom line is novelty neckties can be great fun, amusing and convey a message when the right one is worn at the right time. All you need to do is be sure you know when the right time is.
