The Common Mistakes Want to get better with your Search Engine Optimization? Well, ask yourself whether you are falling into the usual trap that most guys fall into and committing the most common mistakes: 1. Not being original with Title Tags Each category page and post page should be the creation of the human brain. You may have software to do the job for you, but then, the human touch is missing and it shows. The software just places the original post title with your blog name as a mere add-on. Just by replacing words with synonyms that do not convey the original meaning intended won't do the trick. If you however have to use software to do the job for you, then be more specific in choosing software. Use software that is specially designed for Title Tags. 2. Having more than one address for your blog Is your blog affected by what is referred to as 'Canonicalization' in search engine parlance? If your page can be reached by more than one URL, then it probably is. 3. Incorrect Indexing Pages which do not have any specific content or are very much similar to other pages should not be included. Use query operator in Google to find which pages can be avoided and preferably disallow them. 4. Ineffective URLs The best URLs have keywords which are related to the subject matter, have the barest minimum slashes and no question marks. As far as possible use hyphens, as these are preferred by Google. If the relevant and essential keywords are missing from the URL, then the desired effect will be lost. E.g. you have a Sports facility which wants to advertise its Tennis Academy and the URL is: http://Newyork.blogs.com/sports_complex/2008/recreation.html Then the words tennis and academy are missing from the URL. So it is better to write personalized URLs. 5. Insufficient RSS feeds Each type of blog on must be kept in a separate category. Tags also should be more specific. It greatly benefits users and is also great for search engine promotion. 6. Below par podcasts If there are podcasts ensure that there are show notes on every podcast and that your presence is felt on podcast directories. 7. Putting URL on Domains that are not used If you are using the domain of another user then a problem arises when you want to shift to another service provider. You will have to leave the blog with a "We have move from here" sign. 8. Ineffective anchor text Using irrelevant keywords with post copy e.g. 'here' or 'moved'.
