Residential elevators

By: Roberto Garabell

If you you are mobility challenged, there is a good chance that you experience major difficulties walking the stairway of your home. For a large portion of these people, a similar situation will probably lead to the purchase of a stair lift. However, in case you have a curved or narrow stairway, have problems with severe obesity or are simply not able to leave your wheelchair, having a stairlift installed might simply not be a viable option. Instead, you might be better served by a residential elevator. Having an elevator at home may sound exhorbitantly extravagant, but as a growing amount of satisfied people can tell you, it may be a bare necessity to the elderly or disabled. So, if your house is fitted with a curved or narrow stairway, think about making a comparison of the pros and cons of a residential elevator with those of a stair lift.

An additional advantage of a residential lift, is that having one will likely positively influence the value of your property. A properly serviced lift will retain its value almost indefinately. In fact, home elevators are one of the most common amenities installed to boost the value of newly built real estate. Thanks to modern technology and due to recent price drops, a residential lift has now become an acceptable solution to persons seeking to increase the quality of their daily lives. The old advice of 'just' moving to a single-leveled home once the stairs become a hurdle, simply holds no more value. People that are still giving out this advice really underestimate the mental effects associated with moving one's place of residence.

If you are planning to purchase a residential elevator, the most appropriate moment to have one mounted, is during the building of the property. However, during construction time, most home owners forget the fact that they may one day need assisted vertical transportation. Since elevators need a foundation, a shaft, an engine and multiple (usually two) access points, not all buildings are able to accomodate an elevator without modifications. It may therefore well be, that major adaptations are needed before one is able to install a residential elevator. A number of these adaptations could have major aesthetic and/or financial consequences. In order to be brought up to speed on your house's suitability, it would be wise to contact a local company before purchasing the elevator. He or she will send an engineer to analyze your house for any possible issues. The report handed to you after the inspection may include a price quote for having the modifications done by the company themselves. If you want to obtain a non-subjective view of your house, be sure to have it inspected by different companies.

If your house has been found appropriate for lift installation, it is time to start bothering about the more subtle details of the device in question. The most important factors that determine the cost of your installation are track height, number of stops and the elevator's carriage capacity (weight). In general, the lower these metrics, the less expensive your elevator will be. An additional factor that could have great influence on your choice of elevator, is drive type. There are many types of drives, including the chain hydraulic drive, cable hydraulic drive and the vacuum type drive. Every system has its specific (dis-)advantages in noise, speed, durability, capacity and cost. So, be sure you are well-informed by your local company, so you can make a well-educated decision. Finally, you probably want to make sure the interior of the lift cabin has all the features you need. Features you could think about are an emergency button, a telephone jack and gate type. An accordeon-type gate is usually recommended, since a scissor gate could close on your fingers when used incorrectly.
