Paris for families

By: Richard Greaves

If you would like to know what the best time of the year is to visit Paris or France then know that it really does not matter. Paris is beautiful 365 days a year. In the spring, it is soft, in the winter it is crispy in the autumn romantic because of the beautiful colors. It is busy, in the summer months like august, or during Christmas, or quiet just after the summer holidays from September until November. The streets of Paris welcome you every day of the year. If you were thinking about other parts of France then keep in mind that the North and South of the country can be very different in temperature. If you would like to go skiing, then you have two choices, Pyrenees in the south on the border with Spain or the French Alps in the east of France, bordering Switzerland, Germany and Italy. If you would like to visit the countryside of France to do a wine tour then the best time the grapes are almost ripe.

Paris is an international capital of art, fashion and style. To most people it is as a romantic destination, ideal for honeymooners, lovers and adulterers. Paris, however, has many hidden depths and can be a good choice for a family holiday as it offers many activities and entertainments that appeal to all ages and types.

The most exciting attraction for children has to be Disneyland Paris, located in the eastern suburbs of Paris. This enchanting kingdom, filled with fantasy and all the popular Disney characters; also at the venue are Space Mountain, Mission 2, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril, for thrills and excitement. Another giant theme park on the outskirts of Paris is the Parc Asterix, based on the adventures of a favorite cartoon character, Astérix. Visitors go on an entertaining journey through ancient Gaul, the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages to the 21st century, you can meet the Gauls, step back in time to the Middle Ages and travel through Rome and Ancient Greece. The kids love it! If you don’t have time for a theme park, there are plenty of modern museums in Paris that will keep both adults and children entertained as many of them provide interactive and fun exhibitions and activities.

Paris is also a great walking city, tucked away in every neighborhood are charming little parks, open to everyone. These beautiful gardens and parks are the best during autumn as these are full of colour and flowers and an ideal place for a picnic, some even provide old-fashioned donkey rides and merry-go-rounds. Wherever you go, breathe in the delicious smells of pastries and fresh bread from the nearest patisserie or boulangerie. Modern museums will keep both adults and children entertained as many of them provide interactive and fun exhibitions and activities. In these neighborhoods, you can find plenty of typical Paris hotels or other Paris accommodation like bed and breakfast, hostels, cheap hotels and more.

If it is your first visit to France or Paris then you cannot go home without paying a visit to the obvious sites like the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe and the Notre Dame Cathedral. If you have been walking around the city and you are tired, then do not worry, what better way to see these famous monuments and sights but on an open topped double Decker English bus? I promise you a fun and less tiring way to travel around the city and entertaining for all ages.

In downtown Paris, you will find the Grévin wax museum with a theatre of magic tricks and fantasy mirrors that transform you into a short, tall, thin or fat person. Based on Madame Tussaud’s in London, and has very realistic wax models of famous people and important historical events too, so is educational as well as fun. Some famous people include Charles de Gaulle of France and John Kennedy of the USA, Marilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin.

Most of the French people are on their holidays in the month of August. This means that this is the busiest month to travel to France as the locals like to go on a holiday in their own country. I would as well if I were French. It will be very busy, but if you visit Paris during the summer months, you will find the city buzzing with festivals, fetes, events and shows. Expect to see anything from a puppet show to a funfair or an open-air music concert; there is always something happening to keep you and your family busy. This is also a perfect way to meet the locals. Remember that France accommodation can be quiet full during these periods, book on time.

When travelling with children, it is a mistake to try to save money by selecting a cheaper hotel that may well be located on the outer edges of the city and a distance from popular activities. A city centre hotel can mean all the difference to your holiday as there won’t be far to travel to the attractions, it will be easy to return to the hotel if there is some kind of emergency and children have less time to get tired and irritable as there is no need for public transport.

It’s fairly easy to visit Paris with children, French people adore kids and there are plenty of things to keep them busy and entertained. Before you go, introduce your kids to Paris, let them watch ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ for example and show them pictures of the Eiffel Tower. You could even teach them a few simple French words and get to know the locals!
