Hypnotherapy is a rapidly advancing field that is leaving behind the old Svengali-like mind control image, and proving instead to be an effective treatment for a range of psychological and psychosomatic (physical issues exacerbated or created by the mind) problems. Hypnotherapy is a very effective tool in tackling negativity, painful emotions and habits. It can be skilfully used to replace all the above with life changing alternatives. However, in spite of advancements many misconceptions about hypnosis still remain, which means that due to a level of apprehension some people may needlessly avoid hypnosis as a potential treatment. Following is a list of common misconceptions: - 1."I could get stuck in hypnosis" This is a common fear, even to this day. Fortunately there have been no reported cases of people getting 'stuck' in hypnosis. It is very uncommon for people to go into a very deep trance, to the point that they cannot follow the instructions of the therapist to open their eyes. In fact, the patients always remain in control the whole time and can, if they wish, open their eyes if they wish to do so. 2."Could my therapist mind control me?" This is a misconception with its roots in the not so liked Svengali character who would use his evil to control people. Some blame has to be passed to the media at this point which represents stage hypnosis in a certain perception that one can control people. You remain in control throughout a hypnosis session, and though you are willfully accepting the hypnotherapists programming suggestions, you could just as easily choose to disregard any suggestions that are somehow unacceptable to you. 3."What if I can't be hypnotized?" Going into a deep state of hypnosis does require more practice but we all have the ability to some degree. The ability varies from person to person just like people's abilities vary in sports, arts etc but with practice, anyone can achieve the hypnotic abilities required to make changes in their lives. A skilled hypnotherapist will work with each client individually to ensure they have the correct tools and understandings to get results with hypnosis. 4."Will I still be conscious?" During the state of hypnosis, a patient is totally aware of everything around them. Many patients have reported that they actually feel more aware during hypnosis because they are more relaxed and still. They can clearly hear and feel whatever is around them. 5."I do not want to unwillingly disclose secrets" This is simply not true and based on some of the fears mentioned above. As explained earlier, patients are always in control but they may feel more accepting to the positive suggestions that the therapist might tell them. This is one of the reasons that materials discovered in a hypnotic state are not admitted in court. A person can lie very easily in hypnosis if they wish to do so. The understanding of these basics mentioned above help people to achieve much better results with their sessions. Hypnosis is an up and coming field and many people are finding that hypnosis, in the right hands, can help them achieve their goals quicker and more effectively than many of the conventional routes.
