A legal plan service or membership program, is a concept that has been around for a number of years and as legal plans became commonplace in Europe in the 1930's, they remain popular and well-known there today. Now most legal firms are able to offer this legal plan service to all sorts of people and businesses and as the interest continue to grow, other types and levels of legal service plans are introduced. Legal plans work by providing basic coverage and attorney services for a membership, or a prepaid fee that is usually paid monthly or yearly; by paying the membership fee, you have access to an attorney and their services, which without the plan you would have to pay, in some cases, a substantial fee. The concept is quite simple; by providing legal help on issues as they arise, it is hoped that many situations will not progress into full scale law suits and the additional costs involved with them. Prepaid legal plans also have the benefit of supplying the client with free meetings regarding any legal issues they need to resolve. There generally isn't any restriction on the number of times you can contact your attorney and this enables people to obtain what is in essence very low cost legal advice on a wide range of topics. Other services are also included in legal plans and normally a free 'Last Will and Testament' will be included, with yearly updates and many plans will also write a letter or a make a call on your behalf. It is surprising just how effective a letter or a phone call from an attorney is with a dispute with another party, as it will often end there just because they know that a legal representative is now involved. Your attorney will also look over any letters you have received that require a 'legal eye' as well as any contracts you may be in the process of signing. If you need more legal assistance, such as an appearance in court, or extra legal help, you will get a discount on the attorney's hourly fee. Although many different prepaid legal plans exist, the most popular or basic version is geared to look after the individual and those in their immediate family; the business model also deals with issues that affect companies. An example of a specialized legal services plan is that provided to the trucking industry and if you are fortunate enough you may find your employer has provided a scheme for employees; and sometimes these are free but generally discounted at the very least. There are some limitations and prepaid legal services are not designed to solve pre-existing or ongoing legal issues because the focus is on preventative care and access to an attorney for a consultation. If you have a major legal issue, such as a law suit, a divorce, or bankruptcy, a legal plan will be of limited assistance, although you will probably get a discount of the hourly rate you would normally pay an attorney. While these plans are not perfect they do provide a way for many Americans to have access to a lawyer which might not ordinarily be an option; this is a very useful tool when dealing with minor legal matters that affect us all on a regular basis.
