Repair A Leaking Faucet Yourself

Posted on February 28 2010 by Scott Rodgers

A leaking tap is one of the most common problems that almost every homeowner encounters. Though many homeowners call a plumber for solving this problem but in some cases the repair could also be done on your own. You don’t need to immediately call a plumber to fix this problem but first try to solve it by following below mentioned steps.

Before starting the repair process, turn off the water supply to that faucet. Don’t apply much force while turning off the valve as the valve might break in doing so. Also put an object on the sink hole to protect screws, washers and other small materials from falling down.

Now using a screwdriver, unscrew the cover of the tap to expose the retaining screw. Remove this screw and put it in a safe place. After that, you may remove the head of the tap.

After this you need to take out the larger headgear nut using a spanner. You need to be little attentive while doing this because if not done properly, it may harm the pipe that is fixed to it. In case, this pipe gets damaged then only an expert plumber can solve this problem.

In case the headgear nut is very tight and you are not able to remove it then apply some oil on it and leave it for sometime say 5-10 minutes. After 5-10 minutes again try to open the nut and if you are still not able to open it then use heat of an electric paint stripper or a blow torch to make it loose.

Now take off the washer with the help of a screwdriver. In case the washer is tight then you can repeat the process of applying the oil. Now fix a new washer and remove the old one. After this, properly grease the tap base.

Fix everything back and your work is over. You just need to check the tap now by starting the water supply to the tap.

If you still see any problems with your tap then don’t try any other alternative as it might cause another problem. Now is the time to call a plumber immediately.
