Swimming Pool Covers

No matter what anyone tells you otherwise, swimming pool covers are a good idea. Homeowners use them to make sure branches, leaves, twigs and bugs do not get into their pools and cause damage. Saving the pool from this kind of exposure is more than enough of a reason to invest in one.

Every pool has a right-sized pool cover. The need to cut costs and go with a standard cover that claims to “fit all” is tempting, but do not fall for it. It is always best to go for the cover that is customized for your pool.

Fitting your pool will require that you make sure all the angles of your pool (including the steps and other areas) are under the pool cover. Since rarely are two pools in a neighborhood the same, you are wasting your time with a standard fitted cover. These allow the debris you are protecting your pool from to find its way into your pool.

Also, pool covers can be purchased in the form of safety covers, automatic covers or water bag covers.

The advantage of a water bag cover is the weighted bags that accompany it to keep your swimming pool cover in place during heavy winds and rains. The water bags are placed about two to three feet apart and can be placed inside the pool or on top of the cover.

The warranty on your swimming pool cover will determine what is covered and how long you have to report damages that are covered. Make sure you know what conditions the warranty covers is.

Stitching is a strong determining factor for quality in pool covers. It should be more than 10 x 10 to meet the definition of “sturdy,” and it costs a little more than regular covers. You will not be able to prevent some winter damage to your cover. You can, however, cut down on the wind damage by placing a little bit of water atop the cover.

Be sure to purchase a swimming pool cover that is four feet bigger than your pool. Remember their primary function is to protect your pool. Investing in a pool cover is one of your smartest moves you can make, if you want to preserve the life of your pool.
